Recently, I was going through one of the business dashboards where there were multiple filters used on one dashboard and there were relevant values in the filters. But as soon as I started playing with the filters, I saw that some data was missing from the view, after checking all the sheets, I came to know that a few of the filters were selecting only limited values and there was a need to reset all the filters present on the dashboard one by one, there were 7 different filters and I had to manually reset all, From end user's perspective, filters were looking similar to the parameters. This might create confusion among Business users, if anything is wrong with the view, as there will be no reset button on a parameter dropdown.

The simple solution to this is to have an extra reset button next to all the filters so that the user can just reset the filter and all values in all the filters get selecting showing everything thing available in those filters.

I am using superstore data for this problem.

Let's create a sheet with 3 filters and deselect a few of the values.

Now let's create a new sheet and name it Reset Button. Create a new calculated field named [Reset Filter]. Add only "Reset Filters" text as this will serve as a text on the button.

Add this sheet to the dashboard and do some formatting so that the sheet looks like a button.

After adding the sheet to the dashboard, add an action filter to reset other views. Select Reset sheet as your source and the sheets that you want to reset with this trigger as your target sheets. Select "Show all values" on Clearing options. Now the key is to select the fields in filters that you want to reset on other views. You might see a warning below the window about missing fields, but you can ignore it.

And you are done!!

Now when you click on this Reset Filters text, it will reset all the filter values for those selected fields.

Hope you find this post helpful.

  1. I will have to give this a try. I think this could be a great improvement to my dashboard design!
